Have you ever felt a little lost, wondering what life has in store for you?
I have.
Even when I was working for a large international company and felt fortunate to have the career I had built, there were moments when I wondered whether I was truly on the right path. I had a job, financial security, and opportunities to grow. Yet, somewhere in the back of my mind, questions remained.
Was I making the most of my potential? Was there something else I was meant to explore? And how could I better understand myself and the choices I was making?
Understanding ourselves through personality
At work, I was introduced to MBTI (Myers-Briggs Type Indicator), a personality framework that helps us understand our preferences and how we tend to think, make decisions, and interact with others.
I found it useful. It gave me a way to better understand different personalities and recognise that people don’t all approach situations in the same way. It could even help us adapt how we communicated with colleagues.
But while understanding personality was helpful, I sometimes felt that my questions went beyond it.
I wanted to understand not only how I thought and behaved, but also how my strengths might translate into different areas of life, what kinds of challenges I might face, and why certain questions or experiences seemed to keep coming back.
MBTI helps us explore how we tend to think and interact. Zi Wei Dou Shu offers another lens through which to explore our personality, different areas of life, and how our experiences may evolve over time.
Zi Wei Dou Shu (紫微斗数) is a traditional Chinese astrological system. It uses a person’s birth date, time, and location to construct a chart that is interpreted through a network of palaces, stars, and relationships between them.
Rather than focusing on personality alone, a reading can explore themes connected to areas such as personal strengths, career, relationships, resources, and personal development. It also considers cycles traditionally associated with different stages of life.
The aim isn’t simply to assign a label to someone. It’s to explore how different aspects of a person might fit together, including their strengths, potential tensions, and recurring themes.
Looking for direction beyond a corporate career
When I eventually decided to take a break from corporate life, I was excited to have more freedom. I enjoyed stepping away from the usual routines and expectations, exploring new interests, and discovering what life could look like outside the corporate world.
Yet, after a while, another set of questions began to emerge.
Where was I heading?
What was my purpose? If I wasn’t going to return to a traditional corporate career, what should I do instead?
What were my real strengths and talents? What kinds of work might suit me? And were there things I should be more mindful of when making decisions about my future?
I had the freedom to choose, but freedom alone didn’t necessarily tell me which direction to take.
There were so many questions, and not many clear answers.
My first encounter with Zi Wei Dou Shu
Around that time, a friend introduced me to Chinese metaphysics.
I had heard of the Chinese zodiac and BaZi, but Zi Wei Dou Shu was completely new to me. I was curious. And since I was already experimenting with AI and building digital tools, I had an idea: why not try to build an app that could help me explore this system and better understand different aspects of my life?
I started with my own birth information: date, time, and location.
What came back genuinely surprised me.
Some of the interpretations felt remarkably close to my own experiences, particularly when it came to my personality, career, and relationship with money and resources. I remember reading parts of the report and thinking, “No way. How could this describe me so closely?”
Of course, I knew that I might be interpreting some things through the lens of my own experiences. I wanted to see whether the reading would feel meaningful to someone who knew me well, too.
So I ran a reading for my younger sister, whose birth time I also knew. Her chart and interpretations were quite different from mine.
I shared both readings with her and asked for her honest opinion. She was surprised by how closely parts of my reading seemed to describe me, especially in relation to my personality, career, and finances. She also found aspects of her own reading meaningful, although not everything resonated equally.
That was an important part of the experience for me. I wasn’t simply looking for a description that sounded flattering or familiar. I wanted to compare the interpretations with what we actually knew about ourselves and our lives.
Not every part of a reading will necessarily resonate, and some themes may only make sense when viewed in the context of later experiences. But the process left me curious enough to keep exploring.
What had started as an experiment to build an app became a much more personal journey into self-understanding.
What can a Zi Wei Dou Shu reading help you explore?
For me, the most interesting part wasn’t the idea of predicting the future. It was the possibility of looking at myself from a different perspective.
A Zi Wei Dou Shu reading can offer a framework for reflecting on several questions.
1. Understanding your core nature
What strengths and tendencies might come naturally to you? How do you tend to approach challenges? What motivates you, and what might drain your energy?
Seeing these themes laid out together can help you reflect on parts of yourself that you may have recognised intuitively but never fully articulated.
2. Exploring your strengths and potential
A reading can offer perspectives on the kinds of abilities, working styles, or environments that may suit you. It can also invite you to consider whether you are making full use of your strengths—or relying too heavily on some while overlooking others.
This isn’t about discovering one predetermined career or a single path to success. It’s about finding useful questions to ask yourself as you explore your options.
3. Understanding relationships
A reading can provide another lens through which to reflect on relationships with partners, friends, family members, or colleagues.
Where might two people complement each other? Where could their different needs or ways of communicating create tension? What might each person need to understand about the other?
It cannot tell you everything about another person or determine whether a relationship will succeed. But it may give you a starting point for conversations, reflection, and greater understanding.
4. Exploring different stages of life
One distinctive feature of Zi Wei Dou Shu is its traditional interpretation of life cycles.
Rather than looking only at personality, it considers how different themes may come to the forefront during different periods of life. This can offer a way to reflect on changing priorities, challenges, and opportunities.
I find this particularly interesting when thinking about career changes or other important transitions. Sometimes, the question isn’t simply “Who am I?” but “What matters to me at this stage of my life, and what do I want to do with it?”
These interpretations are not guarantees of future events. Their value lies in the perspective they offer and the questions they encourage us to consider.
A different lens, not a definitive answer
I don’t believe any single framework can fully explain a person.
MBTI, Zi Wei Dou Shu, and other approaches to self-understanding each have their own methods and limitations. They offer different ways to think about ourselves, and none should replace our own judgment or the reality of our lived experiences.
For me, Zi Wei Dou Shu became interesting because it offered a broader picture to explore: not just personality, but the possible connections between our inner nature, our relationships, our professional lives, and the different stages we move through.
You don’t have to accept every interpretation. In fact, I think it’s important to remain curious and question what you read.
Does it reflect something you have experienced? Does it help you see a situation differently? Does it raise a question worth exploring further?
And if something doesn’t resonate, what might that tell you?
The reading itself isn’t the answer. What matters is what you learn through reflecting on it.
Why I decided to build Ziwei Compass
My experience was what inspired me to build Ziwei Compass.
I wanted to make this traditional system easier to explore, especially for people who, like me, might be curious about themselves but unfamiliar with Chinese metaphysics.
My hope is that a reading can become a starting point for understanding yourself a little better, looking at your relationships from a new perspective, or thinking more consciously about the choices ahead.
You might be navigating a career transition, trying to understand a relationship, exploring your strengths, or simply wondering what makes you who you are.
You don’t need to be looking for a prediction. Sometimes, all you need is another perspective.
Because understanding yourself doesn’t mean finding a label that defines you or a fixed path you must follow.
It means becoming more aware of who you are, recognising the possibilities available to you, and making choices that feel more conscious and more aligned with the life you want to build.
And perhaps, along the way, discovering questions you hadn’t thought to ask yourself before.
